Pitt senior guard Jermaine Dixon, the only returning starter from last season, injured his right foot during the summer basketball league schedule and could be out until mid-September.
Preliminary tests indicate that Dixon has a fractured fifth metatarsal on his right foot. He will have more tests next week. If those tests confirm the fracture, Dixon likely will have surgery and will be out for eight weeks.
Pitt doctors are very familiar with the injury. It is the same injury that forced former Panther guard Levance Fields to miss a portion of the 2007-08 season.
Dixon, who averaged 8.4 points per game last season, is expected to be ready for the start of practice in October.
Dixon announced that he had the injury via his Twitter feed.
