Police seize thousands' worth of illegal fireworks in Blair County
Saturday, July 04, 2009

Charges are pending against two men after police in Blair County confiscated a cache of professional-grade fireworks.

John Herbert Clark, 56, of Altoona, and Calvin Carl Beggs, 78, of Somerset, are accused of storing and selling illegal fireworks at the Duncansville Antique Depot.

The fireworks have a total retail value between $8,000 and $10,000 and include Class B display-grade fireworks and Class C novelty fireworks. It is the largest cache the Duncansville police have ever dealt with, said Officer James Ott. The fireworks were seized last Saturday.

An undercover officer discovered the fireworks after leads from customers and other vendors at the flea market.

Police, along with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, are investigating how the two men acquired the fireworks.

Class B and Class C fireworks are illegal to buy, sell, or display in the state of Pennsylvania without a license from the Department of Agriculture.
