Probe of improper check case nears end
Thursday, July 02, 2009

Baldwin-Whitehall School Directors said there is some progress in the ongoing investigation of an improper check that was written from the district's high school renovation fund.

They would give no details nor amount of money involved. No changes have been filed.

Last week, the school board met behind closed doors with forensic auditors. Those auditors are also trying to determine if any other funds were improperly accessed.

District officials also contacted Whitehall police to investigate after they were notified of the discrepancy by PNC Bank in late May.

Police Chief Donald R. Dolfi had no comment on the investigation but Superintendent Lawrence Korchnak said that "we are rapidly coming to a close of an investigation that should give us a fairly complete picture of what, if any, damage was done.''

Dr. Korchnak said the district will make public the findings.

"There will be full disclosure,'' he said.

No one has been publicly accused of any wrongdoing.

Earlier in the June 24 meeting, school board members approved an employment termination agreement with business manager Jennifer Pesanka, who was let go in early June. Terms or details were not disclosed.

Ms. Pesanka had worked for the district for three years. She has not been named a suspect in the investigation.

On May 27, Ms. Pesanka's secretary, Linda McWreath, was found dead; her body was found at the Buena Vista boat launch on the Youghiogheny River. The cause of that death is still under investigation.

Police had no comment on whether Ms. McWreath was involved in the case.

Last month the district hired the firm of Horovitz, Rudoy and Roteman Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors of Pittsburgh to audit the construction and other funds.

The district recently finished the five year $64 million renovation project. The project came in about $1.2 million under budget.
