Council recently told residents of Overland Trail that efforts would be made to eliminate problems at Colewood Park caused by some non-residents who use the soccer field at the local recreation area.

Barbara Allemang said foul language, excessive noise, fighting and vandalism were the disruptive types of behavior exhibited by some adults who use the nearby field on weekend evenings when no youth recreational games are played. Another resident, Grant Dagnal, cited safety concerns because of traffic and speeding.

Mayor Sandy Bennett said more police presence was needed at the park. He suggested using the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department or hiring part-time police officers to patrol. He said such actions had been successful several years ago when similar problems occurred in the park.

n Attempts to restart a recreation committee to help oversee the use and maintenance of borough parks and playing fields was tabled by a 3-2 vote because of confusion over the exact title and role of the committee.

Council President Marian Joseph and Councilwoman Shirley Kuchta dissented. Members Dave Depretis and Joan Etzel were absent. Councilman John Ferris, who had proposed the action, disagreed with wording that called it a board. He said the terminology implied that the committee would have more power than actually being an advisory group answerable to council.

Once these issues are resolved, the council will proceed to advertise for residents to serve on the committee.
