There were a few quizzical looks and a couple chuckles in the press box when Josh Harold of Columbiana High School in Ohio lined up to attempt a 54-yard field goal Friday night in the Penn-Ohio Stateline Classic.
After all, 54-yard field goals are for college or NFL kickers, not high school graduates. Well, not for some high school graduates.
Harold, who will play at Mercyhurst College near Erie this fall, made the 54 yarder ... with plenty of distance to spare.
"We thought it would be a fake," said Pennsylvania coach Mark Capuano from Moon.
The field goal was a record at Geneva College's Reeves Field, which opened in 1925. The previous longest field goal was 51 yards by Geneva's John Moores in 1988.
Harold also attempted a 63-yard field goal, but that kick was short. He did make a 30 yarder to tie the score, 12-12, in the third quarter. He also did something else against Pennsylvania.
Harold kicked off four times for Ohio with each going into the end zone. High school rules do not allow a kick to be run out of the end zone.
"We thought we had some nice return guys and they would give us good field position," Capuano said. "But we never got a chance to use them because of his kicks."
