Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Steelers owner Dan Rooney today was sworn in as U.S. ambassador to Ireland.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton administered the oath at a noontime ceremony at the State Department. Mr. Rooney was accompanied by his wife, Patricia, and many family members.

In her remarks, Mrs. Clinton not only saluted Mr. Rooney, but she also sang the praises of the Super Bowl champion Steelers, the Stanley Cup champion Penguins and the economic turnaround that led President Barack Obama to select Pittsburgh for the G-20 Summit in September.

Mr. Rooney was an early supporter of Mr. Obama's bid for the presidency, and he and various players campaigned around Western Pennsylvania.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
