Where to go ... Settler's Cabin Park
Sunday, June 28, 2009

What to do: Two years after the government of the new United States of America signed the first peace treaty with Indians, a pioneer family built a log cabin west of Fort Pitt. It remained an uncertain time: settlers in the region were active in the Whiskey Rebellion, and both Pennsylvania and Virginia claimed the land. Centuries later, archeologists from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History helped to identify the cabin's location. The harvesting of natural resources left the area scarred by abandoned mines and active and inactive gas and oil wells, but Allegheny County rehabilitated the area and founded the 1,589-acre Settler's Cabin Park. Located between Pittsburgh International Airport and the city, the park has the most heavily used of the county's three wave pools and includes a diving platform, tennis complex, trails, groves and picnic areas.
