Guard Stephen Curry can get comfortable with the Golden State Warriors. He's not going anywhere.
Coach Don Nelson says the Warriors won't trade Curry, their surprise selection with the seventh overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night.
Curry, from Davidson, led the NCAA in scoring last season, but seemed an odd choice for the Warriors, given that high-scoring guard Monta Ellis plays much the same style of game. It led to speculation that Golden State drafted Curry to trade him.
Although Nelson and general manager Larry Riley didn't deny discussions with the Phoenix Suns about a trade for power forward Amare Stoudemire, they made it clear Curry won't be a part of any potential deal.
Ricky Rubio was not present when Minnesota introduced its draft class.
Sixth overall pick Jonny Flynn and 28th pick Wayne Ellington attended with new president David Kahn. But the Timberwolves say Rubio decided to stay behind because of his contract situation.
The Timberwolves took Rubio with the fifth overall pick, but it's not clear when he will be able to play in Minnesota. He has a $6.6 million buyout from his Spanish professional team. Both he and Kahn said Rubio may have to play at least one more year in Spain before coming to the NBA.
Kahn says the Timberwolves will be patient through the negotiating process and can afford to wait a year or two for the point guard.
Utah made a qualifying offer to forward Paul Millsap, giving the team the right to match any other offers he receives as a restricted free agent. The Jazz have until Tuesday to make the offer and there was no doubt they would. Millsap averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season, playing mostly as a reserve. He stepped in when starter Carlos Boozer missed 41 games with a knee injury and had a string of 19 consecutive double-doubles.
Shaquille O'Neal hasn't picked out a house in Cleveland yet. He has chosen a jersey number -- his old one.
O'Neal is going back to No. 33. Traded to the Cavaliers Thursday, the 15-time All-Star has decided to wear 33, the team confirmed. That's the number O'Neal wore in high school and at LSU before turning pro. O'Neal wore No. 32 when he was in Orlando, Miami and Phoenix.
When he was with the Los Angeles Lakers, O'Neal wore 34 because Nos. 32 and 33 were retired for Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Alonzo Mourning is returning to Miami -- as an executive. Mourning announced that he will soon begin a new job as Miami's vice president of player development, with a wide range of responsibilities, many of them off the court and in community relations areas.
