Robbery appears to be the motive for a Hill District shooting yesterday in which one man was killed and another was wounded, police said last night.

Hoang "Tony" Nguyen, 21, was fatally shot at Bedford Avenue and Junilla Street just after 12:30 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

Officers and paramedics found a car had crashed into a tree in the 2400 block of Bedford, and Mr. Nguyen's body lay next to the open driver's side door, city police said.

Another man, a passenger in the car, was shot in the leg and taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where police said he was in good condition.

Witnesses said at least one man was talking to the occupants of the car shortly before the shooting.

Police took a man into custody at the scene and were questioning another person.

Mr. Nguyen was a city resident, but the medical examiner's office declined to say in what neighborhood he lived.
