When Local 10 firefighters Fill the Boot for muscular dystrophy tomorrow at the intersection of East Hartman and Fifth streets, they won't be doing it just for Jerry's Kids.

They'll also be doing it for Nicholas Kurta, a 6-year-old boy who has developed a special relationship with the department. Nicholas has muscular myopathy and is a regular at the firehouse.

Firefighters raised $3,420 last year for local families such as the Kurtas. They set a goal of $5,000 this year.

Tomorrow is the first of four fund-raising days the department has planned this summer to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Clairton

The Twist and Shout grocery store in Clairton has closed, and families who use vouchers from the Women, Infants and Children supplemental food program can redeem them at nearby Foodland in Glassport and Giant Eagle in Elizabeth.

A list of all 99 WIC vendors in the county, along with a map showing where they are located, can be viewed on the Health Department's Web site, www.achd.net/wic.

The vouchers are redeemable at participating grocery stores for infant formula, milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, juices and other foods. Additional vouchers are available during the summer to purchase fresh Pennsylvania-grown produce at participating farmers markets and farm stands.

WIC is a federally funded program that provides food vouchers and nutrition counseling for pregnant women, postpartum mothers, breastfeeding mothers, and children under the age of 5. Eligibility is based on income and nutritional risk.

The income limits are an annual gross income of $20,036 for a family of one; $26,955 for two; $33,874 for three; $40,793 for four; $47,712 for five; $54,631 for six; $61,550 for seven; and $68,469 for eight. Add $6,919 for each additional member beyond eight.
