Residents in flood-ravaged communities in Westmoreland County continue to clean up the damage from record-setting rains June 17.
In Jeannette, Brush Creek overflowed its banks, causing some of the city to flood. Fifty people had to be evacuated, some with the help of divers because the water was so deep.
As of Monday, 10 families were still unable to return to their homes and were looking for shelter, said city Clerk Stella Rebitch.
Dan Stevens, Westmoreland's deputy emergency management coordinator, said the county was scrambling to assess the damage so they could apply for help from state and federal resources.
Most roads in the county had reopened. However, part of Route 130 in Unity, near the Mount Pleasant border, remained closed because floodwaters had washed away a portion of the road.
And a massive sinkhole, which authorities believe was caused by a pipe failure under the road, formed earlier this week at the Norwin Hills Shopping Center in North Huntingdon. It stretched to nearly 25 feet in diameter and closed the parking lot.
