Quick getaway to Cleveland
Friday, June 12, 2009

Where: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

How far: Two hours northwest of Downtown Pittsburgh.

How much: Adults $22; seniors $17; children ages 9-12, $13; 8 and younger, free.

What to do: In addition to ongoing exhibits of the guitars, outfits and cars of rock stars, from now until next spring you can walk through the special exhibit "From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen" featuring lyrics, clothing, mementos and artifacts from throughout the career of New Jersey's favorite son. The exhibit features never-before-seen childhood photographs of the baby Boss and some of his early instruments, including his high school guitar. There's the black 1960 Corvette convertible Bruce bought with the success of "Born to Run" and the T-shirt, jeans and battered baseball cap Bruce, or his rear end at least, made famous on the cover of "Born in the USA."

For true Boss devotees, the highlight will be "The Guitar," the battered and stained Fender Esquire/Telecaster hybrid electric workhorse that fans will instantly recognize from album covers and promptly swoon over. Like all truly legendary guitars, it looks like it's been through a lot of abuse. (Warning, you might have to wait in line to genuflect before this Holy Grail of a rock relic, but it's worth it.)

For those who take their Boss fandom really, really seriously, the Rock Hall this weekend is hosting "Springsteen Fanfest," with special showings of Springsteen documentaries and events featuring music scholars, industry experts, Springsteen fans, musicians and bands from around the country.

n Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, and until 9 p.m. Wed. and Sat.

Fun factor: 7 for general rock fans, because there's something for every musical taste at the Rock Hall. For Springsteen fans, it's more like dying and going to rock 'n' roll heaven -- a solid 10.
