Pat's Lunch, South Side

You can't get fat in Pat's Lunch. The East Carson Street eatery is simply too narrow. "It's the longest, skinniest restaurant on the East Coast," says Patti Lewis, whose family has been running the joint for the past 30 years. Patti's mother, Pat Deloe, took over the restaurant when it had the unfortunate name Terminal Lunch (after the nearby Terminal Buildings). "She couldn't answer the phone and say, 'Terminal Lunch,' so she changed the name," says Patti. Pat died in 2007. A tribute to her hangs on the wall, surrounded by pictures of regular customers.
