Major Harris, Curt Warner to college hall of fame

Major Harris, a West Virginia University football star who played in the Pittsburgh City League, has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Former Penn State running back Curt Warner also was selected to the Hall of Fame.

Harris, a quarterback, was one of 16 players and two coaches who were elected to the Hall of Fame today. A 1986 graduate of Brashear High School in the City League, Harris is a former Post-Gazette Athlete of the Year, starring in football and basketball.

He went on to play at West Virginia and as a sophomore guided the Mountaineers to the 1988 national championship game against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Twice he finished in the top five in Heisman Trophy voting and became the first player in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards and throw for 5,000 in a career.

Harris will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at cermonies in New York in December. He will be enshrined at the Hall in South Bend, Ind., next summer.
