Michigan State signed contracts for home-and-home football series against West Virginia and Alabama.

Michigan State will play at West Virginia in 2014 with a date in East Lansing scheduled for 2015. The two programs have not met since 1942.

Michigan State will play at Alabama in 2016 in the first meeting between the two schools. The programs will meet in East Lansing in 2017.

Lance Armstrong is going to miss the Tour of the Gila race in New Mexico. Organizers blame what they say is a rarely enforced International Cycling Federation rule. The race director says the event plans to enforce a rule that prohibits top-level professional teams from competing in national-level events such as the 23rd Tour of the Gila. It would have been Armstrong's first competition since his collarbone was broken a month ago.

The United States broke open a close game with four goals in the third period, beating Austria, 6-1, to reach the second round of the world championship in Bern, Switzerland. Dustin Brown had a goal and two assists for the Americans.

Greg Page, former World Boxing Association heavyweight boxing champion who suffered a severe brain injury in a 2001 fight, died at his Louisville, Ky., home. He was 50. His wife, Patricia Page, said she found the one-time WBA champion in his bed. She said he died of complications related to injuries he suffered in that fight.
