Skiers and snowboarders are celebrating the Sixth Annual Beachin' Weekend today and tomorrow at Wisp, the western Maryland resort that plans to extend its season into April.
The Mon Valley Ski Club is the host of the annual Spring Carnival at Seven Springs where the resort is offering free skiing and snowboarding for children age 6 to 11 and discounted lift tickets for adults.
And Hidden Valley is wrapping up the season with a lift ticket offer that benefits its guests and food banks in Somerset and Allegheny County. Those who donate $10 or that amount in canned goods to the food banks gets a lift ticket.
The Beachin' Weekend at Wisp includes a variety of off- and on-snow activities and the resort has plenty of snow for the latter events. Although many ski areas stop making snow in February, Wisp is an exception. "[We] make snow in March to maintain a consistent snow depth on all open trails," said Bob Yaste, the resort's vice president of planning and development.
The resort's annual Cardboard Box Derby, a fundraising event for the Blind Skier Program of the Garrett County Lion's Club, will be at 1 p.m. today on the Belly Flop Trail next to the Main Lodge. All derbies must be made of cardboard, tape and string. Prizes are awarded for design, speed and judge's choice.
There will be music and games on the outdoor deck, weather permitting. Tom Watt, "The Buffett Man," will perform from 4- 7 p.m. in the Main Lodge.
Spokeswoman Lori Epp said Wisp plans to offer skiing and snowboarding, snowtubing and mountain coaster rides from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 4-5 and 11-12, "weather and conditions permitting." Adult and junior lift tickets will be $20. The Wisp Resort Hotel is offering a special rate for those two weekends starting at $59 per night, double occupancy.
Epp said snowmobile tours will be held on the slopes after 2 p.m. on those four days. The cost for a 30-minute guided tour is $49 for the driver. Passengers age 6 to 15 are free. She also said Easter Sunday events include a mountaintop sunrise service, an egg hunt and an "Easter bunny rail jam."

The club will hold a March Radness Slopestyle event for skiers and snowboarders that begins at noon.
The snowtubing park at Seven Springs will offer two-for-one sessions from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. this weekend. The cost for a two-hour session is $20 per adults and $16 for children aged 4 to 11.
