Blow, don't throw, a kiss for the semis
Friday, December 05, 2008

The Fumbler generally likes kisses, but seriously, enough is enough. Please, for the love of Brad Cashman, would people please stop throwing Hershey's Kisses when your team wins the PIAA semifinals!

Last year, The Fumbler got doinked in the head with an errant Kiss, and he still has a small scar. But, since then, The Fumbler has been leaving his mark on all the other prognosticators. He was 4-0 last week in PIAA quarterfinal action and is now 55-13 in the playoffs. His overall record is 554-133 (.806 percentage).

Here are his thoughts on the PIAA semifinals. All games are at 7 p.m. today, except the Bethel Park-West Lawn Wilson and North Penn-Bethlehem Liberty games, which are at 1 p.m. tomorrow:

Bethel Park (14-0) vs. West Lawn Wilson (14-0) at State College -- This game is a toss-up. But the high school that gave the NFL quarterbacks Kerry Collins and Chad Henne won't add a PIAA crown to its trophy case this year. Winner: Bethel Park.

North Penn (14-0) vs. Bethlehem Liberty (13-1) at Coatesville -- Just like Patrick Henry, The Fumbler thought about saying, "Give me Liberty or give me death." Then he thought better of it and took North Penn. Winner: North Penn.

Thomas Jefferson (13-1) vs. West York (13-1) at Mansion Park, Altoona -- Two things will certainly happen: TJ coach Bill Cherpak will wear shorts, and the Jaguars' lines will wear down West York. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.

Selinsgrove (13-1) vs. Philadelphia Archbishop Wood (11-2) at Hersheypark Stadium -- Good news for the Seals: They will win this week. The bad news? Next week, for the fourth time in five years, Thomas Jefferson will end Selinsgrove's season with a loss. Winner: Selinsgrove.

Aliquippa (12-2) vs. Wilmington (13-1) at Center -- The Quips' tandem of RB Maurice Carter and QB Rasheem Jones is just way too much. Winner: Aliquippa.

Philadelphia West Catholic (13-1) vs. Lancaster Catholic (13-1) at Philadelphia Northeast -- West Catholic's mascot is the Burrs. The Fumbler doesn't know what a Burr is, but he knows it is going to be cold tonight, so he is going with them. Winner: Philadelphia West Catholic.

Clairton (14-0) vs. Farrell (12-2) at North Allegheny -- In the NFL, the Steelers are better than the Bears this year. In the PIAA playoffs, it is the other way around. Winner: Clairton.

Schuylkill Haven (14-0) vs. Steelton-Highspire (14-0) at Blue Mountain -- It must be oh-so lonely playing wide receiver for either one of these teams. As a consolation, at least the Steel-High receivers will play for a PIAA title again. Winner: Steelton-Highspire.
