Contractor blamed for oil slick on Allegheny River
Friday, November 14, 2008

An Army Corps of Engineers contractor working to remove sediment from Girty's Run has been identified as the source of an oil sheen discovered yesterday afternoon on the Allegheny River near Millvale.

State Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Helen Humphreys said construction equipment used by TAB Construction Co. of Canton, Ohio, to dredge sediment out of Allegheny River tributary leaked approximately two gallons of oil that found its way down the creek and into the river.

The sheen had dissipated by this morning. The DEP is reviewing the incident and could issue a citation to the contractor for polluting the creek and river.
