Penguins fall to Ottawa, 3-1
Sunday, October 05, 2008

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- The Penguins will have to settle for a split of their two games against Ottawa in the NHL Premiere.

They lost to the Senators, 3-1, today in the second game in as many days at the Globe Arena.

The Penguins won yesterday's game, 4-3, in overtime.

After a scoreless first period today, Penguins coach Michel Therrien began juggling his forward lines, most notably switching Tyler Kennedy to Sidney Crosby's right wing and Miroslav Satan to Evgeni Malkin's right side, and, at times, putting Crosby and Malkin out together.

No combination could beat Senators goaltender Alex Auld.

Ottawa took a 1-0 lead on Dany Heatley's power-play goal after Penguins winger Eric Godard took a double-minor roughing penalty for a tussle with Chris Neil. Heatley put in his own rebound from in front, batting the puck under goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury's left leg pad at 13:07 of the second period.

Heatley struck again, also on a power play, at 12:17 of the third period. From the slot, he one-timed a pass from Daniel Alfredsson that dinged in off Fleury to make it 2-0.

Antoine Vermette made it 3-0 at 15:50 of the third period when he was sprung by Filip Kuba for a breakaway.

Rookie defenseman Alex Goligoski scored the lone goal for the Penguins on a power play with 0.8 seconds left to play. The Penguins were 0 of 13 on the power play to that point in the two games.

The Penguins will fly home tomorrow. Their home opener is Saturday against New Jersey.
