For the second year in a row, Duquesne University women's basketball coach Suzie McConnell Serio has landed two of the top players in the WPIAL.
Beaver senior forward Carly Vendemia and Washington senior guard Jocelyn Floyd have made verbal commitments to Duquesne. They will sign a binding letter of intent with the Dukes during the NCAA's week-long early signing period in November.
A year ago, Duquesne signed Mt. Lebanon's Jackie Babe and Upper St. Clair's Alex Gensler.
"I'm pretty excited about staying close to home. That was a big part of my decision," Vendemia said. "The other schools I was considering, my parents wouldn't be able to come watch me play as much."
She said she also considered William & Mary, Davidson and Niagara. The 6-foot-1 Vendemia averaged 16.7 points and 12.6 rebounds as a junior and scored her 1,000th career point last year.
"Coach [McConnell Serio] has accomplished just about everything a girl would want to accomplish in basketball," Vendemia said. "I think she has big expectations for this program, too."
Floyd, a 5-8 guard, was a Post-Gazette all-WPIAL Class AA selection as a junior, after transferring from Mount De Chantal in Wheeling, W.Va. Floyd, who averaged 16.4 points and 6.5 rebounds a game last season, also was recruited by Dayton, Princeton, Iona and Minnesota.
