The only bad news coming out of University Park today was the loss of defensive end Jerome Hayes for the rest of the season.
Hayes, a redshirt junior making his first career start in place of suspended All-American candidate Maurice Evans, tore the ACL in his left knee on a special teams play in the fourth quarter in Saturday's 45-14 rout of Oregon State. He will undergo surgery within the next 2-3 weeks.
A year ago, Hayes tore the ACL in his right knee on a similar play against Wisconsin.
The loss of Hayes likely means that freshman Jack Crawford will move back to end to help add depth on a unit that is getting thinner by the game.
Since late July, Penn State has booted projected starting tackles Chris Baker and Phil Taylor off the team and lost backup Devon Still to a broken ankle. The loss of Hayes, a stand-up speed rusher, is painful.
In addition to Evans, starting tackle Abe Koroma also was suspended for Saturday's game while police decide whether to file charges against them in an incident at their apartment last week where a small amount of marijuana was seized.
