Q: Are pass accuracy and lack of knowledge of the offense the only reasons Greg Cross isn't getting a legitimate shot at the backup QB job?
C.J., Pittsburgh
ZEISE: I'd say his lack of experience in a pro style offense and his inconsistency and inaccuracy are the reasons he won't ever seriously compete for the starting job and thus won't be the primary back-up at Pitt either. However, his skill set -- his speed and athleticism and strong arm -- will get him on the field in certain packages and formations and situations. He's going to play this year; how much and in what situations will likely be on a game-by-game basis.
Q: Any good news about Justin Hargrove? I understand he was a stud in high school at Baldwin, but unfortunately had a bad injury that kept him out of last season.
Mike George, Irwin
ZEISE: Justin Hargrove is healthy and played at full speed and with full contact all camp but he is not on the two-deep and is likely not going to be a major factor at defensive end unless there are a few injuries. That doesn't mean he isn't a good player, it is just that position has a number of good players competing for time right now.
Q: Can you list who is injured going into the season? Also, since graduating in '70, I must admit that there have been few seasons that I've been this jacked up for a season to get started. Is my anticipation warranted?
Bruce Lindquist, Savannah, Ga.
ZEISE: Pitt really only has three major injuries right now -- defensive end Doug Fulmer (ACL) and receiver Cameron Saddler (ACL) are both out for the season and Shane Murray (sprained knee) is questionable for next week's game if not longer. Other than that, the team is healthy, though there are some nagging bumps and bruises, like receiver T.J. Porter's turf toe. That's good news. As for your anticipation of this season being warranted -- I'd say yes simply because it is such an unknown in so many ways. I mean, I could see this being a great season for Pitt or a total disaster -- so the mystery surrounding this team should make this an exciting season.
