Lifelong residents to unveil plaque
Thursday, August 21, 2008

When Franklin Park's first state historical marker is dedicated Sunday, four lifelong residents of the borough will play prominent roles in the program.

Mary Pegher Richwalls, Warren Soergel, David Vandevort and Joe Watenpool have lived their entire lives along Brandt School Road, the borough roadway that follows the Kuskusky Path, an 18th century American Indian trade and communications route.

Now in their 80s and 90s, the four are descendants of several of the first families to have settled in the North Hills borough. They will help unveil the marker.

The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in front of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2500 Brandt School Road.

Scheduled to speak are Martha Creese, borough council president; state Sen. Jim Ferlo, D-Highland Park, a member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; Doug MacGregor, educator at Fort Pitt Museum; and state Rep. Mike Turzai, R-Bradford Woods.

Children's activities, refreshments and entertainment by a trio from Appalachian Music of Southwestern Pennsylvania also are on the schedule.

Several groups plan to set up displays inside Trinity Evangelical. They will include North Allegheny History Museum, North Hills Genealogists, Cranberry Historical Society and Providence Plantation of Evans City.

More information about the program is available by calling borough historian Debby Rabold, 412-364-4115, ext. 309, or e-mailing fphistory@franklinparkborough.us.
