Charges possible against sister of accused baby stealer
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Officials are considering pressing charges against the sister of Andrea Curry-Demus, the woman who has been accused of killing a pregnant teenager and cutting the girl's baby from her womb.

The body of the girl, 18-year-old Kia Johnson, was discovered by police Friday in Ms. Curry-Demus' Wilkinsburg apartment.

The day before, Brooke Curry led police to the wrong apartment in the building on Ella Street, where both she and Ms. Curry-Demus lived.

Police returned to the building on Friday after receiving complaints of a pungent stench emanating from one of the apartments. Ms. Johnson was found with her abdomen sliced open and her hands and feet bound by duct tape. Plastic wrap covered her head.

If Brooke Curry deliberately misled investigators, she could face charges, Allegheny Count Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said yesterday.

County police have been in conversations with the Allegheny County district attorney's office about the sister, according to Mike Manko, a spokesman for the office.
