Going into the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XVII Tuesday at Lernerville, Steve Kinser had 16 wins at the track, but only one Silver Cup victory at the track that carries the legendary promoter's name.
Kinser won the first Don Martin Memorial in 1994, which also was the most recent time the Bloomington, Ind., native won the Silver Cup. That was until Tuesday, when the 20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion lived up to his billing as the King of the Outlaws.
Kinser came into Sarver with two wins this season on the ultra competitive WoO tour. The eventual pole-sitter of the 40-lap, $40,000-to-win feature, Kinser qualified ninth and then finish second in his qualifying heat race.
He got the pole because the WoO employs a system where 10 children from the crowd draw starting spots of the 10 fastest cars that qualify for the dash. Where those 10 drivers finish in the dash then determines where they will start in the first five rows of the feature.
The young fan that put the winner of 545 previous WoO features on the pole of the dash was remembered in Victory Lane after win 546. "Thanks, it always helps when you can start on the pole," Kinser said.
Kinser, 54, lost the lead momentarily to Jason Meyers at one point in Turn 4, but quickly regained it and was credited for leading all 40 laps.
He said that he had traction problems racing out of Turn 2. "I couldn't get any bite," Kinser said. "I was amazed [Meyers] didn't pass me on the back chute. I was glad to see the checkered come out."
Donny Schatz, the 2006 and '07 Don Martin Memorial winner, got by Meyers for second. He said he took the blame for making wrong changes to the car and not having the right setup for track conditions.
"We missed [car setup] a little bit, tried too many things. I gave my crew bad information ..." Schatz said.
Meyers, who eventually finished third, had the best opportunity to dislodge the Silver Cup from Kinser's grasp but, like Schatz, his car wasn't as good as it could have been.
"I was rolling through the middle of the track. We tried to correct it [during a red flag stop] and it was the wrong thing to," he said.
Two-time and defending Lernerville track champion Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning was the fastest local qualifier (10th) and the only local driver to run a sub-14 second qualifying lap. He started 13th and finished 27th.
Ed Lynch Jr., of Apollo, finished 16th for the best finish of the local racers. Lynch was on the move late in the race when he was forced to stop to avoid a car that had flipped in front of him.
LugnutsWoO announcer Johnny Gibson will be profiled by Speed Channel at 7:30 p.m. today.
