Kate Hudson joins Marshall's 'Nine' cast
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Director Rob Marshall has added another A-lister to the cast of "Nine," the upcoming movie musical starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Kate Hudson joins a cast that already includes Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren, and Penelope Cruz, who like Hudson is an Oscar nominee.

"It's wonderful having Kate join this extraordinary cast," Marshall said in a statement released by The Weinstein Co. "Her revelatory skills as a singer and a dancer lead to the creation of the role of Stephanie, a fashion reporter from Vogue working in Italy. An exciting new song, written by our composer Maury Yeston, has been added for her as well."

Several entertainment Web sites reported that Hudson beat out Sienna Miller and Anne Hathaway (her co-star in the upcoming "Bride Wars") to win the role.

"Nine" was adapted from the original 1982 Broadway production that won the Tony Award for Best Musical. Marshall, a Squirrel Hill native, and partner John DeLuca ("Memoirs of a Geisha," "Chicago") will choreograph and also are part of the producing team.

Day-Lewis won his most recent Best Actor Oscar last year, for "There Will Be Blood"; his first was for "My Left Foot." In "Nine," he will portray the fictional world-famous film director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting in the UK on Oct. 10.
