Wednesday, May 21, 2008

A Westmoreland County man was killed yesterday afternoon when his car was hit by a tri-axle truck.

Earl G. West, 83, of Fairfield, was pulling out of his driveway onto Route 711 in Fairfield when the truck, driven by Ronald E. Piper, 57, of Youngstown, struck the driver's side door of Mr. West's car. The car flipped and struck a utility pole and a pine tree.

Mr. West, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Piper's truck spun around and struck an embankment, but he was uninjured. No charges have been filed, but state police still are investigating.
