Trinity's Graham Cowieson gets back to first base safely yesterday against Chartiers Valley's Brian Rodavich.

The Butler baseball team made sure yesterday wouldn't be the last day of its season.

The Golden Tornado (13-6) used a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 3-1 victory against Franklin Regional (13-5) in a first-round WPIAL Class AAAA playoff game at Chippewa Park.

Tim Geibel pitched a complete game six-hitter, striking out eight in the victory. Geibel also had an RBI double in the bottom of the first to put Butler ahead, 1-0.

Franklin Regional fought back to tie it at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

In the sixth, Butler pulled ahead for good, getting an RBI double from Ryan Armahizer for one run, and scoring another when Armahizer raced home on a wild pitch.

"It is always good to score early, that puts a little pressure on the other guys," Butler coach Dave Florie said.

"They came back to tie it, but I was really happy with the way we battled. I have to be proud of my guys for what they did."

Butler advances to play No. 2 seed Plum -- which received a first-round bye -- at a time, date and place to be determined.

More Class AAAA

Bethel Park 5, Central Catholic 0: The Black Hawks (12-8) used a five-hitter from pitcher Dave Treushel to upend the Vikings at Burkett Complex. Central Catholic (15-4), which made five errors and yielded only three hits, saw its dream of winning WPIAL titles in football, basketball and baseball evaporate.

Class AAA

Trinity 7, Chartiers Valley 2: The Hillers (14-6) jumped to a 6-2 early advantage and fought off Chartiers Valley (11-7) in a first-round game at Burkett Complex. Evan Bukowski went 3 for 4 with two singles and two RBIs.

Class A

Union 10, Avella 3: Union (11-7) scored seven runs in the first three innings, racing to a 10-0 lead, then cruised to a victory against Avella (12-7) at the Burkett Complex in a first-round playoff game.

Markus Allen went 3 for 4 and had three RBIs for the Scotties. Matt Ault went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Mike Pelto earned the victory.

"We have picked a good time to play our best baseball," said Union coach Gene DiGennaro, whose team has won five consecutive games.

Union advances to play No. 1 seed and defending WPIAL champion Springdale (16-2). The Scotties will most likely face Springdale pitcher Mike Devine, one of the most dominant pitchers in Class A.

"We know we are up for a challenge against him," DiGennaro said. "We better be ready."

Rochester 6, Jefferson-Morgan 0: J.C. Figueiredo struck out 15 in six innings and combined with Zach Matthews to toss a one-hitter as the Rams (16-4) earned the shutout against Jefferson-Morgan (13-6) in a first-round matchup at Burkett Complex. Aaron Petron, who had a two-run double, and Chad Pennington, who went 2 for 2, paced Rochester's offense.

Vincentian 5, Monaca 4: Vincentian (11-7) raced to a 2-0 lead, then had to come from behind for a victory against Monaca (11-8) in a first-round game at Chippewa Park. Vincentian scored runs in the second and fourth to take a 2-0 advantage, but Monaca scored three in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead, 3-2.

"We were up, 2-0, and then, just like that, they were ahead of us," Vincentian coach Dan DePalma said. "We knew there was some urgency and we had to come right back."

Vincentian scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to pull ahead for good, as Eric Reed and John Melvin had RBI singles and John Gourley had an RBI groundout.
