The players' union has filed a grievance over the collapse of catcher Yorvit Torrealba's talks with the New York Mets in the fall.

Torrealba and the Mets reached a preliminary agreement on a $14.4 million, three-year contract in November, a deal that was subject to a physical and never was publicly confirmed by the team.

New York said several days later it had ended negotiations with Torrealba, leading to speculation that a medical exam left the Mets with concerns about his throwing shoulder. Torrealba, who helped Colorado reach the World Series last year, missed nearly three months in 2006 with a strained right shoulder.

Torrealba then re-signed with the Rockies, agreeing to a $7.25 million, two-year contract, a deal that includes a $4 million mutual option for 2010 with a $500,000 buyout.

St. Louis put struggling closer Jason Isringhausen, who has an 8.00 ERA and six blown saves, on the 15-day disabled list because of a cut on his pitching hand. It was reported that Isringhausen hurt his right hand striking a television set in frustration in manager Tony La Russa's office.

Peter Magowan, 66, the owner who brought Barry Bonds to San Francisco, built a new ballpark and kept Major League Baseball in the city, is stepping down as managing partner of the Giants. Magowan is retiring from his duties at the end of this season.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez reported no problems with his strained right quadriceps, one day after running the bases for the first since being sidelined a month ago. Rodriguez is scheduled to play in the first of three extended spring training games today. Barring any setbacks, he is slated to rejoin the team Tuesday.

Atlanta sent left-handed pitcher Chuck James to the minors for the third time and recalled reliever Phil Stockman from Class AAA Richmond.

Catcher John Buck was granted three days of bereavement leave because of health concerns for his wife, Brooke, after she gave birth to twins Thursday night that were 12 weeks premature.
