Carnegie graffiti suspect seen on video
Saturday, May 17, 2008

A suspected graffiti artist in Carnegie was observed on high-quality surveillance video that appeared to show him spray-painting the exterior of a business.

Mason Scarfone, 22, of Library Avenue in Carnegie, was charged by summons yesterday with three counts of criminal mischief and one count each of institutional vandalism and disorderly conduct.

Police said Mr. Scarfone caused more than $2,000 in damage when he put his tag on two businesses on Main Street and the Solid Rock Church on Broadway on May 3-4.

A Carnegie police officer who reviewed the video thought he recognized Mr. Scarfone as someone who spent time in Scott.

Carnegie turned to Scott for help, and an officer there who watched the footage later saw Mr. Scarfone in the same clothes as in the video, Carnegie police Chief Jeffrey C. Harbin said.

Mr. Scarfone was brought in for questioning May 5 and confessed, Carnegie police said.

Mr. Scarfone's tag was "ENZO -- Most Hated Art." Chief Harbin said ENZO represented the letters Mr. Scarfone "could write the best." The chief said he had no idea what Most Hated Art meant.
