Friday, May 16, 2008

Two would-be robbers who attacked a 71-year-old jitney driver and then forced their way into his home were caught last night after a brief standoff with SWAT officers, police said.

Police identified the suspects as Melvin Jones, 28, and Mark Daniels, 29.

They are accused of attacking the jitney driver at 5:19 p.m. as he pulled up to his home in the 7700 block of Fleury Way. The victim told police one of the men struck him with a .45-caliber handgun, causing a deep cut over his left eye. He said the assailants wanted to know where he kept his safe.

Once the intruders were inside, a 19-year-old woman who also lived in the home called police. The victims, who were not identified, managed to escape.

One of the suspects tried to flee, but police caught him after a short chase. He was hit by a taser and treated at West Penn Hospital. Police would not say if the injured man was Mr. Jones or Mr. Daniels.

The second suspect barricaded himself in the home, but surrendered to SWAT officers just before 6 p.m.
