Crafton homes evacuated by police, bomb squad
Thursday, May 15, 2008

Crafton police and the Allegheny County bomb squad searched a house on Cross Street and evacuated neighboring homes while investigating a report of "an incendiary device" on the property.

Crafton Police Chief Harold Rost said police serving a warrant shortly after 4 p.m. found "some suspicious items" in a shed behind the house at 15 Cross St. and cleared the area as a precaution.

"There was a suspicious item that they wanted the Crime Lab to take a look at," Chief Rost said, "just to make sure."

He said authorities were interviewing a juvenile who lived at the home, but the scene was safe. Authorities did not release additional details.

Neighbors identified the home as that of Mike and Cheryl Manzella, who have two sons, Brian, 17, and Joey, 15.

Blake Asti, 17, a classmate and friend of Brian, said he was a junior at Carlynton Junior-Senior High School and described him as a good student who was on the swim team and played the trombone in the band. He had not been in school for three days, she said.
