WWII airman's remains returned to area for burial
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

The remains of a World War II airman found atop a glacier last year in California are being flown into Pittsburgh International Airport on the way to burial in Ohio.

The Department of Defense in March identified the remains as those of Ernest Munn of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Mr. Munn had been missing since November 1942. He was 23 when his navigational trainer plane disappeared after takeoff from Sacramento, Calif.

The remains were arriving at the airport today.

Backpackers in a remote area of Kings Canyon, east of Fresno, told rangers in August they discovered a decomposed body near an unopened military parachute.

Mr. Munn is the second of four airmen from the missing plane to be identified.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
