One injured in Downtown fire
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
An injured person is taken from the Roosevelt Arms apartments, corner of 6th Street and Penn Avenue, Downtown, during an early morning fire Wednesday.

A person was injured during a fire at the Roosevelt Arms apartments on Penn Avenue Downtown this morning.

The fire call came in around 7:10 a.m., authorities said, but when firefighters responded to the part of the Roosevelt building that houses a day-care center and other businesses, they found no fire. Most of the firefighting units then left, but firefighters from one truck that was left behind then found that the fire had started in a sofa in a third-floor apartment.

The victim was inside the apartment in the living room. Firefighters quickly put out the fire while paramedics attended to the victim, who was taken to UPMC Mercy in serious condition.

The second and third floors of the 13-story building were evacuated; fourth-floor residents were alerted. Residents returned to the building after the fire was put out around 7:30 a.m.

Pittsburgh police blocked traffic along Penn until about 8:25a.m.
