WPIAL Class AA Track: Rogers breaks record in 200
Quaker Valley girl wins 4 gold medals

Christa Rogers -- Four golds included record in 200

Christa Rogers had ice packs around both knees. She said her legs were tired. Maybe all those trips to the top of the winners stand took their toll.

A senior at Quaker Valley High School, Rogers stepped up to the No. 1 spot on the winners stand so many times yesterday she likely left permanent footprints on it. Rogers won four gold medals at the WPIAL Class AA track and field championships at South Side Beaver -- three in individual events and one for a relay. She also set one record.

Rogers finished first in the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the 100 hurdles. She also anchored the 400 relay team to a first-place finish. She won the same four titles at the championships last year.

She started her gold rush in the first race, winning the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.55 seconds. A few minutes later, she ran the 100 and won in 12.14 seconds.

A little later in the meet, she teamed with Aleeda Kimbrough, Dakkia Kimbrough and Shemaine Benson to win the 400 relay in 48.88 seconds.

But Rogers had one race left.

"I knew if I made it through the 4 by 100 relay, and I was still walking and breathing, I'd be all right for the 200," Rogers said, with a laugh.

She was better than all right. She was the best 200 runner in the championship meet's history, setting a record of 24.98 seconds to break a mark held by a legendary runner. The record was 25.01 seconds, set in 1999 by Rochester's Lauryn Williams, who went on to run in the Olympics four years ago.

"I really, really wanted to get a record today," Rogers said. "I actually wanted to get the 100 record, but ..."

Williams also holds that record (12.04 seconds).

"The difference in races for me is always my starts," Rogers said. "If I don't get a good start, I don't do as well."

But Rogers has had a dozen golden finishes, ending her WPIAL career with seven individual gold medals and five more in relays.

She was one of two Quaker Valley girls to break records. The other was sophomore Tabitha Bemis, who won the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 4 1/2 inches. She smashed the record of 37-11, set by Chartiers-Houston's Brianna Liebold in 2005.

Another sophomore also had a record-setting day. Springdale's Alexa Sarsfield set a record in the 400 with a time of 58.0, breaking the record of 58.08, set by Deer Lakes' Kerry McKinney in 2001.

Sarsfield also teamed with Stephanie King, Laura Gajdosik and Brittany Loveland to win the 1,600 relay in 4:01, which beat Quaker Valley's record of 4:01.91.

Neshannock senior Kacey Gibson won the 1,600 (5:11.89) and the 3,200 (11:10.27) to give her five gold medals in her career.

In boys' highlights, Jeannette's Nick Spino had an impressive performance, winning the 100 and 300 hurdles for the second year in a row. Spino was part of a WPIAL championship football team at Jeannette in the fall and championship basketball team in the winter. In the spring, the limelight shines solely on him in individual track.
