This afternoon, on the one-year anniversary of her death, former police Cmdr. Gwen Elliott will be remembered at a memorial service at St. Peter Church on the North Side.
Cmdr. Elliott, the first black woman to achieve that rank in the Pittsburgh police force, died last year of cancer at age 62. She also founded Gwen's Girls, an organization to help disadvantaged girls.
The service will be at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow next door in the cafeteria of Cardinal Wright Regional School.
