• The Women's Council of the Community College of Allegheny County is sponsoring a Women's Heart Health Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 in the Foerster Student Service Center on its Allegheny campus, 808 Ridge Ave., North Side. • St. Barnabas Charities is sponsoring a Poker Run and Car Cruise on May 18. Participants should pick up their first card between 9 and 11 a.m. near the ballfield at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 5827 Meridian Road, Richland, and pay for their poker hand. Participants are to visit five hosts along the Route 8 corridor, receiving a playing card at each stop. Prizes are to be awarded at the last stop, where the car cruise is taking place. • Pittsburgh Coaches vs. Cancer, in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, is sponsoring its inaugural Hoops for Hope gala May 31 at the Petersen Events Center on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh. The VIP sponsor reception begins at 5 p.m.; cocktails and silent auctions at 6 p.m.; dinner, program, award ceremony and live auction, 7 p.m.; live music by Jeff Jimerson and Airborne with dancing, 9 p.m. Slated to attend are the head coaches from the men's and women's basketball teams from Duquesne and Robert Morris universities and the University of Pittsburgh. The association also is sponsoring a kickoff event from 2 to 4 p.m. May 17 at the Empress Arabians Horse Farm, 496 Sugar Camp Road, Peters, Washington County. Participants are asked to bring items with a value of at least $25, to be auctioned off during the dinner.

• Home Instead Senior Care is sponsoring an essay contest, "Give a Caregiver a Break," the top three winning essays to be published in Caring Today magazine. The grand prize winner is to receive $5,000 worth of free care and the two first prize winners are to receive $2,500, with 12 others to receive $500. Contestants must be at least 18, providing nonprofessional care to any person age 65 or older and a legal resident of the United States or the District of Columbia. The deadline is July 16.
