Women jump from window to escape Fayette fire
Tuesday, May 13, 2008

A Fayette County woman suffered a leg injury when she jumped from a window to escape a fire at her home in Bullskin.

The 50-year-old woman told fire investigators that she was awakened around 2:30 a.m. by the smell of smoke in her home on Greenbrier Road.

Before she attempted to escape she went to alert her daughter-in-law, who had been asleep in another room of the one-story wood frame house.

The fire temporarily trapped both women in the daughter-in-law's room. So, the two women had to jump from a window, said Larry Stillwagon, the township's first assistant fire chief.

Neither of the women's names was released.

The mother-in-law was taken to a hospital for treatment of a leg or ankle injury, Chief Stillwagon said.

Both women were treated for smoke inhalation.

No other injuries were reported.

Chief Stillwagon said the house, built decades ago as part of the former Bear Rocks ski resort, was engulfed in flames when his fire company and four other arrived.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by a state police fire marshal.
