Newlyweds face additional charges in brawl
Assault, damage charges mount
Saturday, May 10, 2008

A newlywed couple arrested after a wedding night brawl are facing more than a dozen new charges involving injuries to six victims who reportedly tried to break up the fight.

Ross police said the new charges resulted from interviews with several hotel guests who had attended a separate wedding party and found the drunken couple fighting in the hallway at the Holiday Inn on McKnight Road in Ross. Although the couple said their boisterous argument did not lead to blows between them, witnesses told police the groom kicked the bride to the floor, where they found her crying. They accused both bride and groom of lashing out at several who tried to come to her aid, pushing, kicking and punching them.

David and Christa Wielechowski were arraigned on 13 new charges yesterday before West View District Judge Richard G. Opiela. They were released on bond.

The groom now faces four additional simple assault counts involving a mother, father and their two grown sons. Dr. Wielechowski was arraigned previously on charges of assaulting his wife and two other men. He faces two aggravated assault counts after being accused of kicking the father twice in the groin and causing another man a torn ligament in his thumb. The first man may need surgery to repair the groin injury. The second will have surgery Monday to repair his thumb.

Dr. Wielechowski also was charged with criminal mischief after being accused of causing $80 in damage, torn fabric and blood stains, to one of the son's rental tuxedo. That was in addition to previous counts of criminal mischief for alleged damage to the hotel and disorderly conduct. Also, he was charged with conspiring with his wife to commit the assaults and cause harm.

Ms. Wielechowski was charged with assaulting the father, a son and the son's wife. She already had faced two simple assault counts involving two other male victims. She was charged with aggravated assault in the thumb injury and criminal conspiracy. Earlier she was charged with damage to the hotel, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

Ross police spokesman Sgt. William Barrett said the couple was "really out of control and belligerent, even with the paramedics."

Attorney Michael Worgul, who represents the bride, said he found it "surprising and curious" the new charges appeared after the couple told the media their version of events. The groom's lawyer, Robert Mielnicki, said he regretted the officers didn't attempt to interview the couple the night of the incident.

A preliminary hearing on all charges is set for May 28 in West View.
