With one event remaining in the WPIAL Class AAA boys' team track championships, Canon McMillan's title hopes rested on a 1,600-meter relay team that had run together once all season.
Luckily for the Big Macs, the second time was golden.
The senior quartet of Jeravin Matthews, Teddy Mathis, Chris McClellan and Sonny Billingsley came through in the clutch, winning the relay and lifting the Big Macs to the crown at West Mifflin yesterday.
"We couldn't have set it up any better," said Canon-McMillan coach Mike Koot. "We knew it was our four best, and, if it was going to come down to the end like that, we were comfortable with it being in their hands."
The win helped Canon-McMillan edge second-place finisher Baldwin, 81-69, and North Allegheny, 78-71. Defending champion Butler finished fourth.
In the girls' competition, Norwin captured its third consecutive championship.
Riverside's boys' dominated Class AA, beating all three opponents by at least 58 points. The Quaker Valley girls' came out on top as well, claiming their third title in the past four years.
Upper St. Clair and Sewickley Academy, both four-time defending champions in their respective classes, earned semifinal victories and spots in the WPIAL boys' tennis team championships.
In Class AAA, Upper St. Clair will meet Shady Side Academy and Sewickley Academy will face Mount Pleasant in Class AA.
The field portion of the City League championships were held at Oliver, and Schenley's Jamal Williams had a big day, taking top honors in the long jump and triple jump.
Williams' victorious leaps were 19-10 1/2 in the long jump and 39-0 1/2 in the triple jump.
Other boys' earning top spots were Allderdice' s Darnell Campbell (high jump), Schenley's Dustin Loughlin (discus) and Brashear's Sam Sim (shot put).
In girls' action, Oliver's Danielle Reed was a double winner with throws of 84-1 in the discuss and 31-6 in the shot put.
Westinghouse's Melaney Burrell won the high jump, while Brashear's Kandale Jemison (long jump) and Schenley's Ashley Berfield (triple jump) also picked up gold medals.
The top-seeded tandem of Arjun Iyengar and Henry Netzer led a trio of Allderdice duos that earned quarterfinal victories in the City League boys' doubles tournament at Schenley Park.
One semifinal will feature Iyengar and Netzer against fellow Dragons Chris Morris and Shane Fischbach, while the other matches Jake Rubenstein and Gabe Furman of Allderdice against Brashear's Kyle Klebba and Chris Smith.
