
Taylor Juran hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a three-run homer in the seventh in a five-RBI performance that led playoff-bound Shaler (13-6, 9-3) to a 17-11 victory against Pine-Richland (10-10, 4-8) yesterday.
Pine-Richland's Brad Hammer lived up to his surname with two homers and six RBIs while going 4 for 4.
Shaler finished with six homers.
Carmichaels (14-0, 17-1) finished the Class A Section 1 season undefeated after routing Mapletown, 12-2, in six innings. Joby Lapkowicz led the Mikes with three hits and two RBIs. Chuck Gasti was the winning pitcher, striking out 13 without walking anyone. Gasti also hit a home run and drove in four runs. Zach Durban hit a home run and drove in three runs. Carmichaels has won seven section titles in the past eight years.
Defending state champion Seneca Valley (17-2, 11-1) tuned up for the playoffs by routing rival Butler, 10-0, in five innings, in Class AAAA Section 1. Kyle Helisek tossed a two-hitter, striking out nine. Dan Jergel led the Raiders with three hits and four RBIs.
Second-place Peters Township (14-6, 9-6) topped first-place Canon-McMillan (16-4, 11-4) in Class AAAA Section 3, 10-5. Winning pitcher Jordan Jankowski struck out 14. James Stratico hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh.
Class AA No. 1 Seton-LaSalle (17-0, 14-0) finished its Section 6 schedule with a perfect record, routing Brentwood, 15-1, in a seven-inning game. Derek Law pitched a two-hitter and fanned 16. Law also was 5 for 5. Zack Galasso added four hits, three RBIs and a home run. Chris Weigold also hit a home run and drove in five runs.
Greensburg Central Catholic (15-3. 11-1) edged rival Jeannette, 3-2, in Class AA Section 4. Winning pitcher Nate Antone struck out nine. Antone also drove in the winning run with a double in the bottom of the seventh.
Plum (17-3, 11-1) gained a share of the Class AAAA Section 4 title with Central Catholic (15-3, 11-1) by defeating the Vikings, 4-3. Scott McGough, the winning pitcher, threw 21/3 innings of relief, striking out four without a walk. Clint White drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Plum has an eight-game winning streak and will carry it into the playoffs.
