Parks, recreation director named in North Huntingdon
Thursday, May 08, 2008

The North Huntingdon commissioners filled a crucial administrative position during a special meeting last week.

The board voted, 6-0, to hire Matt Bruno as township director of parks and recreation at a salary of $44,000. He replaces Shandra Sheftic, who resigned effective April 25.

Commissioner Angelo Furlin was absent.

Mr. Bruno, of the western area of Hempfield, will leave his position as the coordinator of programs and planning for the Westmoreland County Parks and Recreation Department. He is expected to join the township administration by June 2.

"Parks and recreation is a major priority with the commissioners," said board President David Herold. "Our plans to improve township parks and playgrounds and expand recreation programs and special events are in place.

"With summer approaching, a sense of urgency exists among the board to keep everything moving. That's why we decided to act instead of waiting."

The annual free all-day Summer Kickoff of recreation programs is scheduled for May 24 at Oak Hollow Park.

"Mr. Bruno comes to us with a fine academic background and extensive experience in parks and recreation," added interim township Manager Michael Turley.

"In addition, he knows the Norwin community and the region. We are confident he will offer new ideas to build from our existing plans and programs."

Mrs. Sheftic also was the township's liaison to coordinate joint recreation programs with the Norwin School District, including the development of the Norwin-Tinker's Run Park education trail, which begins near the new Hahntown Elementary School.

"Our partnership with the school district is very important to ensure that our efforts focus on providing quality recreation programs and facilities citizens can utilize and enjoy," Mr. Herold added.

"Our district values the township's commitment to recreation," said Norwin Superintendent Dr. Jack Boylan.

"Director Sheftic's contribution not only was vital in the Norwin-Tinker's Run Educational Trail becoming reality, but also in coordination of joint program efforts."

The township owns and maintains 11 parks and several playgrounds. An extensive upgrade of Lions Park will start soon. The renovation of three soccer fields in Oak Hollow Park is under way. And an extension of walking trails is planned at Indian Lake Park and Oak Hollow.

Planned recreation programs include movies on the lawn, camps, a tagged fishing derby and wildflower tours at Braddock's Trail Park.
