Auto racing notebook: DanicaMania back in fast lane again
Saturday, April 26, 2008

When her first IndyCar victory finally came, as Danica Patrick always knew it would, everything was in place to take full advantage of the moment.

"You want to make the most of this event for everybody -- the team, the sponsors, the league and everybody," Patrick said yesterday at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., where she will try to win two in a row tomorrow.

Patrick appeared relaxed and confident after a whirlwind of publicity following her win in Japan last week. The frenetic week included a series of TV appearances, dozens of interviews, attending a movie premiere and an outpouring of adulation from her fans and the general public.

"Yeah, I worked my butt off for a week," Patrick said, grinning. "I feel pretty good, though. I think that everything happens for a reason and, if this would have come three years ago on the heels of Indy or something like that, maybe I wouldn't have been so calm and prepared."

Also, Patrick's home state of Illinois is celebrating her milestone IndyCar win. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich said today will be "Danica Patrick Day" in the state. Blagojevich called her "a new hero in Illinois."

NASCAR

Kevin Harvick Inc. has started a random drug testing program since recent revelations that former Nationwide and Craftsman Trucks driver Aaron Fike had used heroin on some race days.

An outside company was hired to administer the tests, and he said all the drivers and crew chiefs volunteered to go to the drug-testing facility. Harvick is hoping NASCAR will adopt a similar policy to help keep the sport clean. He initially approached officials pushing that idea last season.

Formula One

Finland's Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari was fastest in both practice sessions yesterday for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Raikkonen followed up a Ferrari 1-2 finish in the morning session by clocking a best time of 1:21.935 from 38 laps around the 2.892-mile Circuit de Catalunya track. Raikkonen, the defending world champion who won at this track in 2005, was 0.05 seconds faster than Brazilian teammate Felipe Massa in the morning at 1:20.649.
