Ask LaMont: Get your feet ready for sandals
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
Q: Sandal season is here at last, and I want my feet to go from crusty to camera-ready. Actually, they survived winter pretty well except for some callousy skin buildups in a few areas, mainly the heels. Can you give some advice on how I can handle this at home without paying a professional?

A: Sure. There are all sorts of regimens you can do, but I'll tell you what I've found to be easy and effective.

First, fill a plastic foot tub about two-thirds full of water on the hot side of warm. Rub rinds you've saved from fresh oranges, grapefruits or lemons all over your feet and then soak your feet in the tub until the water begins to cool off. (Might as well toss the rinds in the water. The citrus acids help gently exfoliate and have the added benefit of aromatherapy.)

After the soak, rub an exfoliating scrub all over your feet and rinse. L'Occitane's Shea Butter Exfoliating Foot Scrub is good for men as well as women. It's about $20 at L'Occitane stores and Sephora, or you can just mix up a paste of honey and granulated sugar in the kitchen.

After exfoliating and rinsing, dry your feet and rub a pedicure file or emery board on the drier areas to remove stubborn skin buildup. Dead skin, softened during the soak, should sand right off.

There's also a great little device called the PedEgg Foot File that files well without pain and captures the skin shavings as they are removed. It's about $10 at Sally Beauty.

The final step is a rich foot cream or lotion -- mint varieties are soothing and cooling -- or Vaseline petroleum jelly mixed with a couple of drops of an essential oil. Spa Pedicure Cucumber Heel Therapy by Creative Nail Design is good for men and women; it's about $20 at Ulta.

Do this ritual at least once a week. It will keep your feet sandal-ready all spring and summer and save you some money at the same time.
