For the first time since December 2005, Pitt (19-6, 7-5) is not ranked in the Top 25 of The Associated Press or ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. That ends a streak of 48 consecutive polls in which the Panthers were ranked by at least the AP or the coaches.
Pitt fell out of the rankings after a 72-54 loss at No. 25 Marquette Friday night. The Panthers are No. 26 in the AP poll and No. 27 in the coaches' poll, under "others receiving votes."
The previous time Pitt was not ranked in either poll was more than two years ago. The Panthers began the 2005-06 season out of the polls, but after winning their first eight games they were ranked No. 25, beginning the streak.
Pitt, which travels to play No. 21 Notre Dame Thursday night, is 8-6 in the past 14 games and has not won three consecutive games since beating South Florida, Seton Hall and Georgetown from Jan. 9-14.
The loss at Marquette was the fourth loss in the past eight games for the Panthers, who played the first 11 games of the Big East schedule without starters Mike Cook and Levance Fields. Fields, who is recovering from a fractured bone in his left foot, returned for the Marquette game and played 20 minutes. Cook is out for the season with a knee injury.
Pitt has now been ranked in 113 of the past 119 polls.
