Q: Much has been said about veteran leadership on the Pitt team. My concern is that the veterans on the team are not very good players and no matter how they try to lead they can't do it by example on the field. We hear the same faint praise from the staff about the older players but on the field we see the same guys play poorly. Poor blocking, poor pass routes, poor tackling, etc. I think it is time to go with the youth; after all, what do we have to lose. After the last two weeks, not much, I say. What say you?

Jim Colbert, Johnstown

ZEISE: If you are asking me should the best players be on the field, the answer is yes. Trying to determine who those players are is a different story. I mean, for instance, much has been made about the offensive line and its struggles, but what young player is ready to step in and make a difference? I do agree there are some guys like Greg Romeus, Jabaal Sheard and Dorin Dickerson who can make plays on their natural ability and because this team is in need of some playmakers, should get more time. But I'd be careful to just assume that younger guys, who may be more "hyped," are automatically better than the veteran in front of them.

Q: Does Bill Stull have a redshirt left, and if they use it and Bostick shows dramatic improvement what would be the quarterback situation next year? I've also talked to some UT fans here and they said a Philip Fulmer for Dave Wannstedt trade is not out of the Question.

Chris Zeise, Knoxville, Tenn. (Chris is Paul's brother)

ZEISE: Stull does indeed have a redshirt year and if he is redshirtted, it would obviously create a situation where Pitt would actually have some quality depth at quarterback as well as a healthy competition for the starting job -- assuming Stull doesn't transfer, which is entirely possible if it looks as if Bostick has seized the quarterback spot. That's why the coaching staff has been out looking through the junior college ranks for a quarterback, in order to have a back-up plan should that occur. As for Phil Fulmer, yeah, that makes sense -- I can see why Tennesse fans would be upset with a guy who has won 77 percent of his games, has the team in New Year's Day bowls almost every year, has already won a national championship, a couple of SEC titles, produces NFL talent every year and rarely loses unless it is to a team which is ranked in the top 15. Yeah, sounds like a guy who needs to be run out of town. I will say, however, he wouldn't be well-received at Pitt because many diehards could never forgive him for the (real or imagined, depending on who you ask) way he undermined Johnny Majors in order to get the job in the first place.
