Audiences will want to be "Someplace, Not Here." Not the kind of awkward situation that occasionally plagues us, but Attack Theatre's latest production, running at 4801 Penn Ave. in Garfield, handily located next to the group's studio.
As it turns out, the group has selected another garage -- a la "Games of Steel" -- and this time transformed it into the slickly appointed A Bar with a cozy, draped entrance, flat screen televisions, lit bar, a bandstand and, of course, a spacious dance floor.
The premise was a need to connect, and the connections, if you were looking for them, weren't there. Just like the nifty band Local Honey, with its Dylanesque blend of country and urban rock, "Someplace" was a series of contrasting vignettes that played out amid some drinking games, a few sexual games and a toilet video.
Michele de la Reza, Peter Kope and Jeff Davis were more strongly delineated in their character-driven solos near the start, which had a serious, more reflective angle to it.
Despite a strong cast of six dancers, that approach created some uncertainty by the second act, where they were looping around in countrified do-si-dos and Attack's signature brand of physical modern dance. Although the production could have retained more of the dramatic underpinnings, the performers seemed, as we were, highly entertained by being "Someplace."
"Someplace, Not Here" continues 8 p.m. today, tomorrow, Thursday and Friday. Tickets: $18-$35; 412-394-3343 or proartstickets.org.
