It may have been the worst kept secret in Pittsburgh sports, but today it finally became official -- junior Bill Stull was named Pitt's starting quarterback.
Stull was locked in a competition with redshirt freshman Kevan Smith and freshman Pat Bostick, but he pulled ahead early in camp and never really was seriously challenged.
Still, Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt waited until today, which marks the last day of camp, to name a starter for their opener next Saturday versus Eastern Michigan.
"It is pretty obvious Billy Stull is our starter at quarterback, he's performed the best," Wannstedt said. "He's confident in what he is doing, he understands our offense and Kevan Smith and Pat Bostick will keep working behind him."
