Today was "media day" for Pitt, which is always held the day before training camp begins. There is no practice or anything football related; the players are just made available for pictures and interviews and the team takes their official photos with the coaching staff. That means tomorrow these daily Q&A's will include a few of my observations from camp.
I will say Bill Stull really handled all the media scrutiny very well and he showed he is mature enough to handle the rigors of being in the spotlight. Now whether that translates onto the field has yet to be seen but he did an excellent job with the media. Also, I'm not sure if Dorin Dickerson, Jason Pinkston and Tommie Duhart can play (because all are unproven) but all three certainly look the part, especially Dickerson, who is about 225 and looks like he was chiseled out of a rock.
Q: Do you
think there is enough depth on the offensive line to enable it to
play at a high level all season even if a couple get injured?
Pedro Leonel
Brazil
Zeise: It depends on the position. If Jeff Otah gets hurt, you can pretty much forget about it -- they simply don't have another left tackle, period. But I do think they have enough capable guards that if they lose one or perhaps even two they could still be OK, though you'd rather not find out. Dave Wannstedt said today he's looking for the best five guys to start on the line and then the best three to be their back-ups. From where I sit I think it is possible they might just finally have enough bodies for that -- eight quality linemen -- to be a realistic thought.
Q: What
does the loss of Elijah Fields mean for the secondary?
Geoff Moorer
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Zeise: Not much from the standpoint of starting positions because he wasn't going to beat out either Eric Thatcher or Mike Phillips based on the way they played in the spring. However -- from a depth standpoint and from the standpoint of having a big-time talent who is a heavy hitter and an excellent athlete, to bring in to the games -- he was a natural talent who could have brought something different to the table and could have been one of those high-impact reserves.
