In one of the strangest endings in recent memory, Moon (12-6) earned a 1-0 win in eight innings against Yough (14-4) in a first-round WPIAL Class AAA playoff game at California University.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Yough's top hitter, Josh Aldridge, looked at a 3-1 pitch on the inside part of the plate. Thinking it was ball four, pinch-runner Matt Luciani started clapping and celebrating as he jogged toward home plate. One problem -- the pitch was called a strike. Moon easily tagged Luciani for the final out of the game.
"I took Matt aside after we got home and made sure he knew it wasn't his fault," said Yough coach Terry Odelli. "Having just three hits is what lost us the game, not that last play."
